Army Sexual Harassment
Cases of sexual harassment are not are not unknown features in many a big organizations and the Army also has its own share of such incidences. Army sexual harassment is an ongoing problem in armies the world over, the only difference is that such cases are not revealed as easily as it would be if it were in any other multinational, this is because nowadays all big organizations have come up with rules to protect their female employees, all employees have to compulsorily follow the guidelines laid down in the Company sexual harassment policies.
The U.S Army in order to control the cases of army sexual harassment has issued the Department of Defense Sexual Assault Response policy, whereby all complaints of sexual harassment are investigated very strictly and action taken against the assailant. Most of the women officers who are harassed are either harassed by their immediate superiors or some officer who holds office of important post hence they hesitate to report sexual harassment for the fear of losing their job in the army. The Indian Army follows the Army Act while dealing with cases of Army sexual harassment.
Even today when the law treats the women at equal footing with men, they are not treated so in practice. Protecting the home and going to war is still considered as the male dominion and women are outsiders in this male environment, this is the reason why women are second harassed in ranks after the black men.
The number of increasing cases of army sexual harassment has caught the attention of policymakers and of the media forcing then top ranking army officers to strictly investigate such cases and give just ice to the victim in order to reassure her and also restore the faith of future lady cadets in the army.
In order to control and prevent the cases of army sexual harassment the US Army held its third Sexual Harassment/Sexual Assault Prevention Summit in Arlington, Va., from March 29 - April 1, 2010. Army Leaders at the brigade and the battalion level, Congress representatives and staffers, subject-matter experts from the civil sector and sexual harassment prevention and response proponents gathered to discuss progress in implementing the policy. The theme of this summit was ‘hurts one… affects all’ that it is the duty of all to prevent sexual harassment. This theme brings to the forefront the core of the Army values which is duty.
