Company Sexual Harassment Policies
Getting into the mess of sexual harassment law suit is something which every company fears, to avert any unsavory situations the company sexual harassment polices are laid down and all the employees are made aware of the same by mentioning them in the employee handbook. To understand the harassment policies it is very important to understand what constitutes harassment and most importantly sexual harassment. All unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment. This is more so when the submission or rejection of such offers directly affect the employment of the victim. Any body can be the harasser a supervisor, a colleague, an agent, or an outsider who holds certain power over the employer, it usually a person who is in a superior position than the victim and it could be a male or a female.
But it has been observed that women sexual harassment is more prevalent in organizations then male harassment, this is because the fairer sex has still not been accepted as an equal counterpart and is treated an outsider and someone who can treated as a sex object which makes it all the more important to lay down strict company sexual harassment policies to avert any such situations which can land the company in a legal suit.
Of course, the best way to eliminate any such cases from happening is to prevent them in the first instance it self. Any harassment policy prevalent in the organization must specifically state that any cases of sexual harassment will be dealt with very strictly and those responsible would face serious consequences, also the employers on their part should act quickly on receiving any complaint of harassment from any employee and conduct thorough investigation.
Implementation of company sexual harassment policies brings two matters to the forefront, one is that sexual harassment does exist in the corporate world and secondly that the companies acknowledge this and are unwilling to tolerate such kind of unacceptable behavior in their organizations, and it is of no surprise that some of the known organizations conduct workshops annually to educate their employees on the subject of sexual harassment at workplace and give them a platform to express themselves and to come forth and discuss the doubts which they tend to keep to themselves because they are not sure about how to deal when faced with a situation of sexual harassment.
