Of all the forms of communication with people at a distance, letters are most commonly used. Communication by telephone may be faster and easier but it does not have the advantage of a letter. A letter is a record, we can refer to it as and when we want. Letter has a personal touch; it has the imprint of the personality of the writer. It fastens good relations. It may be used for a variety of purposes – making enquiries, relying to queries, keeping in touch with people, applying jobs, asking for things or services, complaining, persuading, apologizing, advising, congratulating, making business transactions etc.
There are many kinds of letters. These letters are categorized as informal and formal letters. Informal letters have a sub-category of semi-formal letters.
