Harassment In Schools
We all have heard of army sexual harassment and sexual harassment at place of work some time or the other, the school too is not free from this menace. While it is worse at the college level, it is present even in elementary schools, middle schools and high schools.
Harassment in schools too could be physical, verbal and even visual. It can be committed by school authorities on students or by students on students. Many a times these incidents go unreported, mainly because the tender minds of elementary school students fail to determine the wrong intentions of a person or distinguish between friendly gesture and sexually harassment. When the awareness dons on them they get confused and embarrassed to speak about the incident. Similarly, high school and middle school students for fear of being ridiculed or being accused of wrongdoing restrain from making complaints.
Harassment in schools is often overlooked, so it becomes difficult to nail the offender. Most schools do not teach their students to distinguish between bad touch and good touch. Therefore lifting skirts or bra snapping is categorized as mischief. All that the students do is dress appropriately to minimize embarrassment.
When students are harassed by teachers in schools, it is overlooked again as this again is hard to prove till the teacher does not repeatedly harasses the student.
According to a survey conducted on students (both boys and girls) studying in high schools, four out of five students were subjected to harassment in schools some way or the other. As some harassment can be grouped as bullying it becomes difficult to get the exact number of students harassed.
Of course there is a solution to resolve this problem in schools. Let the students understand that no one has the right to make them uncomfortable. Let each classroom be supervised by two members of the school staff either by teachers or their assistants. No student must be left alone with an adult. The school can make arrangement for CCTV cameras to be installed in each classroom and the corridors. The parents also have an important role to play, so train them to identify abnormal behavior patterns in their children. It could be depression, hesitancy on part of the child to go to school etc.
After all as adults we need to lend our support to our children and help them to get out of this trauma and prevent them from further torture.
