Women Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment can be defined as bullying, coercion, intimidation which is of sexual nature, asking sexual favors for doing some work for an individual is sexual harassment, the casting couch is the best sexual harassment example that comes to mind when one talks about sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment is not gender biased, men are also prone to sexual harassment but it is still women sexual harassment which is most prevalent in almost all spheres of life whether it is workplace or in the sanctity of their homes it is the women who suffer harassment the most. Irrespective of developed, developing or under developed countries, sexual harassment exists everywhere, the only difference is that it comes forth more openly in developed nations because the people are aware of their rights and the laws that protect them, whereas in the underdeveloped countries the women are exploited because they are usually uneducated and too scared to report any cases of women sexual harassment.
The status of women in India has undergone a sea of change in the years gone by. From the times when they were forced to observe the purdah system to the modern times where they are at par with the men in every field there has been a sea of change. But one thing that has not changed in the sexual harassment that they face day in and day out, whether it is eve teasing on the roads or dowry demands from the husband and his family or granting sexual favors to the boss women are being harassed every day at every possible place. In fact, women sexual harassment is the curse of Indian society.
Even in a place where education is imparted places like schools and colleges, repulsive cases have come to light where principals and supervisors have been found demanding sexual favors from teachers in return for granting them permanent posting or promotions as the requirement may be. There have also been reported cases of some professors sexually exploiting female students and the students are too frightened to report their harassment and continue to bear the embarrassment for the fear of getting bad markings in the professor’s subject.
Women sexual harassment is something which has to be dealt very strictly and any complaint of such harassment should be promptly investigated the perpetrators should be brought to book as quickly as possible in order to restore the faith of women in the legal system of the country.
